Why Cam Newton makes blocking fun for the Patriots linemen

For the first time in 20 seasons, the New England Patriots have a running quarterback — and to the delight of the offensive line. It’s no secret that Cam Newton is more mobile than Tom Brady. As a result, the line has fun blocking for Newton.

In Sunday’s 45-0 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Newton powered through the Chargers defensive line, with the help of his line. Joe Thuney, David Andrews and Jermaine Eluemunor pushed Newton into the end zone for a touchdown. The Patriots extended their lead to, 21-0, and that put them in firm control of the game.

It was a sure display of teamwork, as the linemen kept the play alive. Perhaps even more impressive was that the whistle was not blown, and the linemen were able to stay up and keep things moving.

Speaking to the media on Monday, David Andrews explained just how fun it is blocking for Newton.

“It’s awesome, man,” Andrews said Monday in a video conference. “It makes you want to protect him, block for him. And know if you give him a chance, he’s going to do everything he can to get in the end zone. (On) his second touchdown, I believe, they kind of had him at the 1-yard line, and we just kind of bowled it in there at the last second and got it in.

“I mean, you love that in a lot of backs, our backs do that, fall forward, get those extra yards. And he’s pretty, pretty special with the ball in his hand at times.”

As the Patriots face a stout Los Angeles defensive line that features Aaron Donald, blocking will be paramount for success.
