Why Callum Hudson-Odoi isn't on Chelsea's squad list for the Champions League

Callum Hudson-Odoi will still be able to play in the UEFA Champions League this season despite being left out of Chelsea's squad list for the group stages of the tournament.

The European champions announced their 25-man squad but several fans spotted that the England international was only included on the reserve B list released on the UEFA website.

Fans were concerned that he may have suffered an injury that could rule him out long-term, but it's actually just a simple reason for his inclusion on the reserve list and that is that the club does not need to register him.

UEFA rules state that any player under the age of 21 that qualifies as "homegrown" does not need to be registered as part of the maximum 25-man squad for the tournament and can instead be included on the B list.

This means that while they are not listed in the official squad, they are still eligible to play in the tournament so long as they are added to the B list which can be amended by the club at any time.

Hudson-Odoi is joined by youngsters Harvey Vale and Lucas Bergstrom on the B list whilst there are some surprise names in the 25-man squad.

Malang Sarr, Ross Barkley and Lewis Baker have all been handed shirt numbers and a spot in Thomas Tuchel's Champions League squad although the trio are not expected to feature heavily for the Blues.

Chelsea begin their title defence against Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg at Stamford Bridge on September 14 before travelling to Turin to face Juventus two weeks later.

Swedish side Malmo complete the group and will be the Blues' third opposition when they travel to west London on October 20.
