Why Bristol O2 Academy is 'best venue in country' for disabled access

A keen concert goer with MS has named the O2 Academy in Bristol as the best venue in the country for disabled access.

David Johnson from Exmouth was diagnosed with the disease three years ago but still regularly attends gigs across the country.

Multiple Sclerosis, a condition which affects the central nervous system, means the 55-year-old is unable to stand up for long periods of time.

He says this has led to "unpleasant" situations at certain venues, which he says sometimes do not adequately accommodate people with disabilities.

"Some are good, some just do what they have to but some really go out of their way," he said.

He went on to say Bristol was one of the venues that goes the extra mile after he attended a Rival Sons gig on Thursday night (November 7).

"The O2 in Bristol is easily the best venue for disabled access," he said.

"They have a system where you register your disability with them and they keep your details on file.

"You're basically guaranteed a carers ticket free of charge."

Mr Johnson added that staff "went out of their way" to make sure he was looked after.

"I can't stand for a long time so when I arrived they got me sat down straight away," he said.

"Two medics came over and escorted me to the disabled area and kept checking I was okay.

"When I needed the toilet, they cleared the way for me and escorted me there and back again.

"They don't have to do this but they went out of their way.

"All in all it was really good. Other local venues - they have their faults."
