'Why?' - Bristol City fans respond to Joe Morrell decision as Wales star set for Luton transfer

Some Bristol City fans are in disbelief today as Robins midfielder Joe Morrell looks set to leave the club to join Championship rivals Luton Town.

The Wales international is understood to be closing in on a surprise end-of-transfer-window move to Luton, with the two clubs said to be close to agreeing a fee for the 23-year-old.

Morrell, who is currently away with Wales on international duty, only signed a new deal with the Robins at the end of November of last year, extending his stay in BS3 until 2022 with an optional year clause to take him to 2023.

But now, the City academy graduate looks set to leave the club in search of first team football, having found his opportunities limited at Ashton Gate.

It is a move that has not gone down too well with some City fans though, with plenty taking to social media to voice their opinions on the proposed switch.

Here's what some Bristol City fans have been saying.

Morrell began his career with Bristol City and signed a professional contract with the club in December 2012 after turning down an offer from Liverpool.

He has since had several loan spells away from the club at Sutton United, Margate and Cheltenham Town, while he shone on loan at Lincoln City in 2019/20, featuring 32 times for the Imps and scoring one goal.

It was hoped that he would come back to Bristol City and get game time under new boss Dean Holden, but that hasn't happened as yet, with Morrell yet to feature for the Robins this season.

He has, however, played four times for Wales at senior international level this season, with his latest game for Ryan Giggs' side coming against Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

Morrell now has nine caps for Wales.
