Why Bristol Bears should now be safe from relegation

No side has ever been relegated from the Premiership with more than 39 points.

Bristol Bears' 23-21 win over Saracens on Saturday night means they now have 41 points.

There have been 12 sides competing in the English top flight for 20 years and in that time there have been three previous occasions when clubs breached the 30 point margin only to get relegated.

Bristol fans with good memories will remember only too well as the club went down in 2002/03 with the second highest total for a relegated side.

The other sides, who were too good to go down, were Northampton Saints in 2006/07 with 33 points and Harlequins, 2004/05, with 38 points.

Both sides bounced straight back up and have since gone on to win the Premiership title and compete in European Cup finals.

With three rounds to go Newcastle Falcons are currently bottom of the Gallagher Premiership in 2018/19 on 30 points, which means even if they don't pick up another point this season they will still go down with the fourth highest total in history.
