Why Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest will always trump Leicester City title winners

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher caused outrage amongst Nottingham Forest supporters last week by claiming that Leicester City's 2016 title triumph eclipsed the work of Brian Clough in the late seventies.

But now one miracle man has come forward to finally fight Forest's case and explain once and for all why Clough's success will always trump that of their East Midlands rivals.

Former City Ground player and manager Martin O'Neil, who thanks to his five years as boss at Leicester stands as close to impartial as can be, has told Sky Sports that while Leicester's 2016 achievement was "phenomenal", the team already boasted key Premier League experience - something that his Forest teammates did not.

Under Claudio Ranieri, Leicester stormed to a 5000/1 title victory that year in what proved to be the ultimate underdog story.

But unlike Leicester, Forest's success continued after winning the title the season after snatching promotion to the top flight, winning back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980.

"I think Leicester City's achievement was phenomenal, almost relegated the previous year but they had the experience of being in the Premier League," O'Neill told The Football Show.

"But we went straight up and we scrambled up from the second division and just added a couple of players, top-quality players, I might add," he said.

"We added immediately Kenny Burns and then Peter Shilton came after five or six matches. Archie Gemmill came in too and suddenly we were in business.

"You're absolutely right," O'Neill said to Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, who claimed Forest's European triumph still is the greatest ever achievement by an English team.

"That achievement is phenomenal and I don't think it'll ever be bettered."
