Why Boston’s Jayson Tatum is not an MVP candidate so far this season

In a recent discussion about Jayson Tatum‘s performance with the Boston Celtics this season, the topic of why Tatum might not be a front-runner for the NBA’s 2024 Most Valuable Player candidacy with the Celtics.

Tatum’s play, including his improved strength when driving to the basket, a decline in free throw opportunities, and a focus on quicker decision-making has boosted his game — but in a context with a lot more star power around him. Tatum’s shooting percentages, particularly on pull-up shots, have not been ideal early in the season and this has impacted his overall contribution to the team, as his tendency to play slower than the rest of his team excels at.

The absence of the MVP narrative around Tatum this season is not surprising when you factor in all elements of his current season to date, but is a topic worth exploring in detail.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast recently weighed in on it with guest Steve Bulpett of Heavy; check it out above!
