Why Boston’s Jayson Tatum deserves more buzz for the NBA’s 2024 Most Valuable Player award

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum was widely seen as a likely leading candidate for the NBA’s 2024 Most Valuable Player (MVP) award before the start of the 2023-24 season. But we may not have been taking his team’s roster construction into account in such a calculus, given the team that had made it to the NBA Finals had just added another pair of All-Star caliber players to the roster.

This puts the St. Louis native in the odd position of being the best player on the league’s best team, yet somehow finding himself outside of the top five prospects for the award even so. How is this a fair assessment of where Tatum ought to be in such a race? Should not the MVP power winning at the highest level?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” and “Talkin’ Cs” podcasts sat down to hash it out on a recent episode.
