Why Bernd Leno was left out of Mikel Arteta's squad for Manchester United vs Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has missed the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United through injury, the club have confirmed.

Leno started the first three league games of the season but has since been usurped by summer signing Aaron Ramsdale, with the German restricted to a role in the Carabao Cup since a 5-0 loss to Manchester City back in August.

Ramsdale has performed excellently since coming into the team, registering a whopping six clean sheets in his 10 Premier League outings for Mikel Arteta's side.

Now, Leno has received another setback, missing the game against United with a tight groin.

The German international has been linked with an Emirates Stadium exit in recent weeks considering Ramsdale's form combined with the fact his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023.

The former Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper admitted back in October that he may have to seek a fresh start in the January transfer window, claiming that Arteta didn't give him any clear reason as to why he was dropped.

“There was no clear reason why I was out, but it had nothing to do with my performance," Leno told Sport Bild. "He is the trainer, he decides. Of course, it’s difficult for me."

“London is very nice; Milan is not bad either and closer to my home Stuttgart,” he added. “I’m not seriously thinking about that yet. I feel comfortable at Arsenal and in London.

“Only if nothing changes in my situation by winter would I have to think about things: what option do I have, how can I continue? I’m concentrating on my work in training. I can’t commit to anything else at the moment.”
