Why Benjamin Mendy is not in Man City matchday squad vs Liverpool

Pep Guardiola has produced a major team selection shock by picking Angelino ahead of Benjamin Mendy for today's crunch clash with Liverpool. The Frenchman has not even made the bench.

The game at Anfield will be a first Premier League start for the Spaniard, whose only other start this season was in the Carabao Cup tie at Preston.

City had the boost of Rodri returning to the starting XI after recovering from a hamstring injury, while David Silva has made the bench.

The big talking point all week is whether Ederson would play, but - as Guardiola said yesterday - he is not fit, and Claudio Bravo will be between the sticks.

The choice of Angelino - who is likely to be up against danger man Mo Salah - is a huge call, and is understood to be a tactical decision. There is no indication of an injury for Mendy.

The 22-year-old earned a reputation, both in the City youth ranks and at PSV Eindhoven, as being a good attacking left back, but one who is suspect defensively.

That will be tested against one of the world's best wingers today.
