Why Bengals will get late start to offseason workout programs

The Cincinnati Bengals will start their offseason program later than most NFL teams and won’t have anything at all in the month of April.

The reason? A Super Bowl trip, of course.

Friday, the NFL announced the offseason workout dates for all 32 teams and the Bengals have the latest start date of any team.

The Bengals wouldn’t have done it this way if they hadn’t just played the longest season in NFL history (new 17-game season plus the Super Bowl trip, making it 21 games).

A late start to the offseason program means more focus on the draft process by coaches who, during a non-Super Bowl year, were focused on the draft for months.

The Bengals also don’t have a mandatory minicamp scheduled for June, making them one of two teams without one, the other being the Philadelphia Eagles. That was the camp Zac Taylor called off last year after his team met the league’s required vaccination rate.

And of course, keep in mind the late start and the lack of a mandatory camp in June is also a way to keep players fresh.
