Why BBC newsreader had to switch outfits and wear black to announce Prince Philip's death

BBC newsreader Martine Croxall was seen having to change outfits live on air as news of the Duke of Edinburgh's death broke.

Prince Philip, 99, sadly passed away peacefully this morning, Friday April 9, at Windsor Castle.

As strict potocol in the event of the duke's death dictates, the announcement was made to the Press Association and the BBC first.

Before news broke, Martine was seen delivering the news wearing a brown, long sleeve dress with a gold necklace.

"You’re watching BBC News," she began to say. "We have just received a statement from Buckingham Palace, confirming that the Duke of Edinburgh has died."

The screen momentarily went black to read "news report" with the BBC's logo while Martine repeated the statement for a second time.

‘We have just received this information from Buckingham Palace,’ she informed viewers, while repeating the statement for a second time.

However, when she returned to the screen, she had removed her necklace and had acquired a black blazer put on over her dress.

Viewers of any news programme or other broadcast today will also notice the presenters also wearing black.

Operation Forth Bridge, the plan which was put in place for when the Duke of Edinburgh passed away, says that newsreaders must wear black, alongside any other presenters who are on the television, out of respect for the loss.

The country will enter a period of national mourning and further announcements from the Palace will made in due course.
