Why Batman can continue Liverpool filming despite Tier 3 rules

Batman is continuing to film in Liverpool this week as new Tier 3 restrictions come into force in the city.

Multiple residents had questioned on social media why production of the film was allowed to continue when local businesses such as pubs, bars and gyms have had to shut.

Production of the film has been ongoing over the past month, having been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It has seen areas outside iconic landmarks such as St George's Hall transformed to allow filming for the next installation of the popular franchise.

Liverpool Council does not comment on individual productions taking place in the city but, when approached by the ECHO, confirmed the Tier 3 restrictions do not limit filming.

A spokeswoman said: “The new restrictions in Liverpool do not currently impact on filming in the city region. The Film Office is working closely with every single production to ensure covid-safe measures are in place and are being adhered to in accordance with rigorous industry protocols.”

Figures from Liverpool Film Office, which supports and nurtures film productions in the city, show the sector as an increasingly important economic driver for the city.

Filming and production in Liverpool is believed to have brought in £17.6m to the economy over the last year.

The council is investing in new pop up studios near the Littlewoods Building, itself the focus of a planned major film and production development, in order to try to take advantage of a predicted boom in filming after the pandemic.
