Why Barcelona were fined just €300 over Antoine Griezmann transfer controversy

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have revealed why Barcelona were ordered to pay just €300 in the Antoine Griezmann transfer wrangle.

Barca were found to have acted illegally in their negotiations with the French forward when signing him from Atletico Madrid .

Griezmann had a €200 million release clause last season, but that became €120 million from July 1 - which was when Barcelona signed him.

Atletico accused Barca of entering into discussions with Griezmann back in March before holding off till July to complete the transfer in order to avoid paying a further €80 million.

But the RFEF felt there was not enough evidence to prove the accusations, despite conceding Barca had done wrong, and added that the timing of Atletico's announcement that Griezmann was leaving also played a part.

Griezmann's impending departure was made public by the club on May 14, over six weeks before the transfer window opened.

An RFEF statement said: "It is important to highlight that the contacts between FC Barcelona occurred once the player had manifested his intention to leave Atlético Madrid."

Barca's punishment was therefore to be a minimal fine, or they would have to play one home fixture behind closed doors - but the federation deemed the latter too harsh.

"Among these sanctions, Mr. Instructor proposes to this Committee Competition that the punishment be either a fine of 300 euros or closing of the Camp Nou for a match," the statement continued.

"It is clear that the economic sanction - in the absence of circumstances that aggravate the conduct, the fine must be imposed in its medium degree.

"However, this is not a sufficient reason for this Committee to opt for the sanction of the closing of the stadium by a match. That seems to be intended for violations of another nature."

Griezmann has been an important player for his new club so far this season, making seven appearances, and scoring three times.

But Atletico have started the brighter without him, as they sit third, three points ahead of Barca in sixth.
