Why Barcelona 'ended interest' as Matthijs De Ligt set for Juventus

Barcelona have ended their interest in Ajax captain Matthijs De Ligt - because the teenager wanted too much money.

And now it looks like this summer's hottest transfer property - who wanted wanted £10million a year - has chosen a move to Juventus.

Reports in Italy claim a deal for £62million has been struck between Juventus and Ajax.

The race to sign De Ligt has been the summer's top transfer story after the 19-year-old's impressive displays in skippering Ajax to the Eredivisie title and the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Barcelona were perceived to be leading that race - but the La Liga giants have refused to unbalance their wage structure for a 19-year-old, according to latest reports in Spain.

Instead, De Ligt could now be heading for Juventus , with some reports claiming a deal had already been agreed between Ajax, the player and the Italian champions.

Paris-Saint Germain, Manchester United , Liverpool and Arsenal have also been linked with the player.

With a good stock of centre-halves already at the club, Barcelona will use the 75million euros they had earmarked for the Dutch defender to target Antoine Griezmann or Neymar.

That is according to Spanish publication Marca , who say Barcelona could not countenance a deal that would ultimately have cost them more than 130 million euros (£116million).

The transfer with Ajax would have cost and estimated 75m euros plus add-ons, and the centre-back had asked for 12m euros net per year (more than £10million). Over the period of a five-year contract, that would cost the club 60m euros just for his salary.

Barcelona weren't prepared to pay that, Marca said, so the door has been opened for Juventus.

The Catalans already have four centre-backs in the squad - Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti and Jean-Clair Todibo.
