Why Aymeric Laporte and Benjamin Mendy are not in Man City squad vs Arsenal

Aymeric Laporte and Benjamin Mendy both miss Manchester City's game with Arsenal in the Premier League due to injury.

The pair started at Elland Road - City's last fixture - and spent the international break training at the City Football Academy given they were not needed with their national team.

However, they have both picked up problems that see them ruled out of the match with the Gunners. Laporte's muscle injury is not considered to be too serious at the club but Pep Guardiola told Sky that Mendy would be out for "a little bit longer" than his teammate.

In their absence, Nathan Ake starts alongside fellow summer signing Ruben Dias at the heart of defence while Joao Cancelo makes his first appearance of the season, having featured for Portugal in the last fortnight. Kyle Walker completes the back four, with Ederson taking his place between the sticks as usual.

City do welcome back Sergio Aguero into the starting lineup, the Argentine playing his first game for the club since hobbling off against Burnley in June. Raheem Sterling is also fully recovered from the hamstring issue that forced him to pull out of England duty.

Rodri starts in the holding midfield role with Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden expected ahead of him and Riyad Mahrez taking his familiar spot on the right side of the attack.

City are looking for their first home win of the season in the league, having lost 5-2 against Leicester in their only other fixture here.
