Why average speed cameras have been installed on the A1 around Newcastle

Speed cameras have been installed on a stretch of Newcastle road as part of a massive highways improvement scheme.

Highways England is behind plans to transform five miles of the A1 between junction 74 at Scotswood and junction 79 at North Brunton

The project, which started last month, is estimated to cost between £105m and £120m and will create a third lane which will see the existing carriageway split into three narrower lanes.

Works are expected to end between 2022 and 2023 with the extra lane added between junction 74 at Scotswood, just after the River Tyne, and junction 79 at North Brunton, speed on the new lanes will be limited to 60mph.

Average speed cameras have been installed on the stretch to make sure drivers are sticking to the speed limit, but Highways England could not say when they would be taken down.

A spokesman for Highways England said strict safeguarding measures are in place, in line with public health England guidance, to protect workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

He added: “Working alongside Northumbria Police, we are installing CCTV and average speed cameras as part of the A1 Scotswood to North Brunton improvement scheme.

“This is so we can recover any broken-down vehicles and ensure people are adhering to the speed limit, making the route safer for those travelling along it.”
