Why Aston Villa's deal for Tyrone Mings ironically means Bristol City are under no pressure to sell Adam Webster

Aston Villa finally completed the signing of Tyrone Mings yesterday.

Dean Smith's side splashed the cash for the defender, who spent part of last season on loan from Bournemouth and impressed enough to convince Villa to part with a whopping £20m to sign him permanently.

Villa are hoping to strengthen their defence further and have already had a bid rejected for Bristol City's Adam Webster.

The bid was believed to be around £12m - far less than the Robins' asking price, which is said to be closer to £30m.

It is an asking price that many Villa fans have scoffed at but the ironic thing is it is their club's big spending that has enabled the Robins to hold out for such a high amount.

Bournemouth have already spent a significant portion of the £20m they received for Mings, buying Lloyd Kelly from the Robins for what was a club-record sale.

Securing a sizeable fee for Kelly, along with the sales of the likes of Joe Bryan, Aden Flint and Bobby Reid last year, has meant the Robins are under no pressure to sell Webster.

It means that Villa are said to be exploring their options elsewhere, having been linked with Gary Cahill on a free transfer.
