Why Arteta shouted at Martinelli as Arsenal's set piece coach works his magic against Leeds

Set piece assistance

Arsenal’s improvement at set pieces this season has coincided with the appointment of Nicolas Jover, who left his role with Manchester City to join the Gunners.

Jover is a set piece specialist whose methodical approach sees him regularly stand next to Arteta when the team or attacking or defending set pieces.

One familiar aspect from Saturday’s game was seeing Jover once again alongside Arteta as Arsenal took a free kick from inside their own half.

Arteta’s delegation of specific roles has helped the Gunners climb into the top four and they were once again scintillating to watch as they took Leeds apart at Elland Road.

Animated Arteta

Arteta drew criticism from some quarters after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over West Ham after appearing animated throughout the game.

The Spaniard was in a similar frame of mind on Saturday as he stood outside of his technical area and bellowed instructions at his players.

This was evident in the first half when he shouted at Gabriel and told him to push further up the pitch as Arsenal took a free kick from inside their own half.

It was a similar case with Martinelli who hugged the left touchline at points in the opening 45 minutes, with Arteta encouraging his forward to make overlapping runs.

Arteta’s advice certainly worked as Arsenal secured the three points at Elland Road with a terrific performance.

Why Arteta was angry at Martinelli and the players

Gabriel Martinelli is entering into the form of his life at the ideal time for Arsenal.

Without former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the squad the Gunners are lacking one less experienced striker, who despite his poor form, can always conjure up a moment of magic,

Martinelli now has the same number of goal involvements as Aubameyang in the Premier League this season (5) and it’s no surprise to see him grasping every opportunity he’s given.

Arsenal fans were disappointed with Mikel Arteta’s decision to restrict Martinelli’s game time last season, after the Brazilian showed flashes of his brilliance in the Europa League and cup competitions.

And he did everything right on Saturday evening as the youngster celebrated in front of the Leeds supporters after scoring both of his goals. On the second occasion, Martinelli blew a kiss towards the irate home fans which prompted the Gunners boss to tell his players to celebrate closer to the dugout.
