Picture special: Why William Saliba has returned to Arsenal ahead of Watford clash

Arsenal summer signing William Saliba may not be able to play for the Gunners until next year, but the French defender was pictured back at London Colney on Friday afternoon.

The France under-21 international defender joined Arsenal in the summer for £27million, but was loaned back to Saint Etienne for the season.

Saliba is yet to play for the French club this season after undergoing surgery to fix an abductor injury, and Arsenal have confirmed that the 18-year-old has returned to the training ground to work on his fitness.

In a statement on the club website, Arsenal wrote: 'William Saliba is currently back with us as part of his rehabilitation programme from a recent groin injury.'

The centre-back was pictured with club legend Robert Pires and also going through his paces in the club gym and on the training pitch.

Saliba had the option of joining the Gunners' bitter north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, but opted to join Unai Emery's side.

"Well, the history, the badge... since I was little, I've been watching Arsenal play in the Champions League and so on, and there are a lot of French players who have come through here," he told the club's official website.

"So that really helped me to make my mind up."

Arsenal travel to Watford on Sunday with a relatively fully fit squad, but Emery will be without Alexandre Lacazette after the Frenchman was ruled out with an ankle injury.

At the back Hector Bellerin (knee) and Kieran Tierney (groin) are recovering swiftly and have already returned to first-team training, but the weekend's game comes too soon for the pair.

Rob Holding is now fully available but the EFL Cup and Europa League are more likely opportunities for him to make his return, meaning that David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos should remain together.
