Why Arsenal's Europa League game with Vitoria will be played on a Wednesday

Arsenal have confirmed their Europa League group stage match with Vitoria has been rescheduled.

The Gunners will hope to go one better than last season, when they were comfortably beaten by Chelsea in the final in Baku.

Unai Emery's side will fancy their chances of progressing to the knockout stages after being drawn with beaten semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt, Standard Liege and Vitoria.

Arsenal face the Portuguese side back-to-back in the group with the first clash at the Emirates taking place on October 24.

But the club have now confirmed the return encounter in Guimares has been moved.

Arsenal had been due to travel to Portugal on Thursday November 7, taking place at either 5:55pm or 8pm.

But the match has now been pushed forward to Wednesday November 6, with a 3:50pm kick-off.

"As mentioned in previous communications, this match has been switched by UEFA from Thursday to Wednesday due to other matches taking place in close proximity in Portugal," the Arsenal statement read.

Vitoria's Estadio D. Alfonso Henriques' stadium is just 15 miles away from the home of local rivals Braga, who also qualified for the Europa League.

Braga are also in action on Thursday November 7, against Besiktas, and Portugese police forbids multiple teams in the same region from playing home matches on the same night.

And Braga's higher UEFA co-efficient means it is Vitoria who have had to move their fixture.

The kick-off time of 3:50pm also prevents the match clashing with Champions League ties on the same night.

Rivals Tottenham and Man City are also in action on Wednesday November 6, but face trips to Red Star Belgrade and Atalanta respectively.
