Why Arsenal have been forced into considerable transfer blow following Brentford debacle

Arsenal have reportedly been forced to pay out another €1million (£850,000) for the signing of Spanish defender Pablo Mari following the loss to Brentford on Friday evening.

The Gunners got their season off to the worst possible start, going down 2-0 to the newly promoted Bees, with Mari starting in the heart of defence alongside £50million arrival Ben White.

It was an utterly disappointing evening for Mikel Arteta’s men, with the defence in particular being subject to a considerable amount of criticism.

To add insult to injury, the Gunners were then forced into a further transfer payment following the debacle in west London.

As per Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Arsenal were required to pay a further €1million (£850,000) to Flamengo for the permanent signing of Mari should he reach 20 appearances for the north London club.

The 27-year-old reached that number against Brentford, marking the occasion with a hugely underwhelming performance.

Whilst Arsenal have forked out even more on top of the reported £6.8million that they paid out to make Mari a permanent Arsenal player, the club could even be set to pay out even more.

As per the reports, Arsenal are set to pay out €1million for every 10 matches that the Spaniard plays for the club, up to the value of €8million.

This means that the Gunners could potentially be forced to pay out as much as €16million (£13.6million) for his signature should all of those milestones be hit.

He still has three years left on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium and should he continue turning in performances such as that seen against Brentford, the Gunners may certainly regret agreeing to pay that amount.
