Why Arsenal could be set to pay even more for Aaron Ramsdale amid Bernd Leno exit reports

Aaron Ramsdale became the most expensive goalkeeper in Arsenal history this summer after he completed his move from Sheffield United.

The Gunners paid the Blades a reported £24million to sign the England stopper, Ramsdale eventually penning a four-year contract at the Emirates Stadium with the option of a further year.

So far, Ramsdale has remained behind Bernd Leno in the pecking order under Mikel Arteta, having made one appearance for his new side - that being the 6-0 thumping of West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns a few weeks ago.

Despite already having an extremely lofty price tag, Ramsdale’s services could soon become even costlier for the Gunners if reports are to be believed.

Around the time of the transfer, The Athletic reported that Arsenal could be in line to pay up to £6m in add-ons for Ramsdale should he become Arteta’s established first-choice in north London.

That of course is yet to happen with Leno remaining No.1 for the time being, despite having an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium.

That element, however, is exactly what could see Arsenal fork out approximately £30m for Ramsdale.

Recent reports have suggested that the German stopper, who was signed from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in 2018, is a target of Italian champions Inter Milan, who could even potentially pursue his signature as early as next summer.

Of course, should Leno move on, that would likely see Ramsdale promoted to instant first choice with fellow stoppers Arthur Okonkwo and Runar Alex Runarsson not quite ready to be a consistent option between the sticks.

That choice would then reportedly automatically see Ramsdale’s clause activate and Arsenal have to pay even more on top of his price tag.
