Why Arsenal chose not to sign Caglar Soyuncu as Leicester defender shines again

Arsenal were linked with a move for Caglar Soyuncu in back in 2018 with Unai Emery tipped to sign the Turk from former club Freiburg that summer.

However, a move to the Gunners never materialised for the then 22-year-old, but did make the move to the Premier League in August that year with Leicester City in an £19million deal.

The defender is now into his second season with the club and has shone this season for the Foxes, playing a starring role in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday.

And, it has now been revealed that Emery never made the move for Soyuncu because he was impressed by Calum Chambers.

The Express highlighted football.london journalist, Charlie Watts, who reported back in 2018 that the Turkish international would unlikely move to the Gunners because of Chambers.

“In terms of a new centre-back, Emery rates Chambers highly and already has Sokratis, Koscielny, Mustafi, Holding, Mavropanos.

“They like Soyuncu, but I can’t see it happening this summer."

Since Soyuncu joined Leicester, the 23-year-old has only made 15 appearances, 12 of which in the Premier League.

But, Brendan Rodgers appears to be a fan of the defender, playing him in every single game this season, in fact Soyuncu hasn't missed a minute so far.

Leicester moved up to third in the Premier League after defeating Spurs a the King Power Stadium.

Goals from Ricardo Pereira and James Madison sealed a comeback win over the north Londoners after Harry Kane had put the visitors ahead.

The Foxes travel to face Luton on Tuesday in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup before returning to the King Power on Sunday when the take on Newcastle .
