Why Arsenal can't name a full 25-man squad in the Premier League this season

Arsenal will be unable to name a full 25-man squad for the first half of the 2021/22 season following their transfer deadline day business.

The Gunners added six players over the course of the summer window, with shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale joined by centre-half Ben White, left-back Nuno Tavares, right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu, centre-midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga and playmaker Martin Odegaard.

Technical director Edu also offloaded the likes of Hector Bellerin, Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira, who left the Emirates Stadium on various loan and permanent deals whilst Brazilian winger Willian also cancelled his contract with the club.

Willock, Bellerin and Nelson all qualified for the home-grown quota, making it impossible for Arsenal to name a full 25-man squad for this season as they were left with just six homegrown players over the age of 21.

Premier League teams are permitted to name no more than 17 overseas players in their 25-man squads, with the remaining eight places available to homegrown members of the squad.

To be considered home-grown, players need to have been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Welsh FA for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

However, the Gunners won't have any issues registering any players this year, having been forced to exclude German playmaker Mesut Ozil and Greek defender Sokratis last season due to their bloated squad.

Mikel Arteta has 17 non-homegrown players at his disposal this season, meaning all will be part of the squad.
