Why Arsenal and Chelsea should not be surprised by Europa League final ticket allocation

Baku is set to be extremely busy later this month with Arsenal and Chelsea fans descending on the city for the Europa League final.

The Gunners sealed their place in the showpiece finale last Thursday with a 7-3 aggregate win over La Liga side Valencia, with the Blues beating Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties to set up a clash against their London rivals.

As great as it is that two Premier League teams will contest the final in Azerbaijan, talk, unfortunately, has been dominated by the paltry ticket allocations both clubs will receive.

Arsenal and Chelsea will only receive 6,000 tickets each even though the Olympic Stadium Baku holds just shy of 70,000 fans.

According to UEFA, the meagre ticket allocation for both clubs is due to the fact that the host city cannot cope with an influx of more than 15,000 fans.

The vast majority of the remaining tickets for the game have gone to fans with 37,500 up for grabs in a public ballot on UEFA's website back in March.

The remaining tickets are allocated to the local organising committee, national associations, commercial partners and broadcasters.

This is nothing new for Europa League finals, although numbers for the two finalists have always been slightly higher in recent seasons.

Here we take a look at the numbers from previous Europa League finals:

2018/19 - Arsenal vs Chelsea - 6,000 per club

2017/18 - Atletico Madrid vs Marseille - 11,500 per club

2016/17 - Manchester United vs Ajax - 10,000 per club

2015/16 - Liverpool vs Sevilla - 9,000 per club

2014/15 - Dnipro vs Sevilla - 9,500 per club

Premier League odds on top four for next season are concerning for Arsenal and Chelsea in 2020
