Why are we holding European Elections after we voted for Brexit?

The European Elections are just over a week away but many will be left questioning the UK's involvement considering its plans to leave the European Union.

The ballot, which takes place every five years, is on Thursday May 23 and people in the North West will be voting to elect eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to represent the region within the EU .

Votes will then be counted and results announced on Sunday evening of May 26 and the early hours of Monday.

Despite Britain's plans to leave the EU following the referendum in 2016, it still has to take part in the elections.

This is because the elections are one of the conditions of Brexit being extended to October 31 after Prime Minister Theresa May failed to negotiate an exit deal before March 29.

As well as this, legal obligations means that British citizens still have the right to be represented in the European parliament as Britain is still a part of the EU.

So, if the vote didn't take place, British citizens would have the right to demand they be represented in European Parliament.

If the vote didn't take place in the UK, Britain would automatically face a no-deal Brexit on June 1.

However, if Theresa May does get a deal through before the end of June, the MEPs chosen to represent the UK will not take their seats.

This is because those elected do not take up their seats until the beginning of July.
