Why there are no FA Cup replays this season

The Football Association announced there will be no replays in the FA Cup this season.

The reason for their decision is because of the impact of Covid-19 on football.

As such, matches will be decided on the day, with extra time and penalties to be used if needed.

The decision was taken by the FA last month, with mounting Covid-related postponements already causing significant headaches in the fixture calendar.

An FA statement read: “This exceptional decision was approved by the FA Board on Friday, December 17, and has been taken in the wider interest of English football to alleviate the possibility of fixture congestion, following several postponements in recent days and continued uncertainty ahead due to Covid-19.

“Ties in the third and fourth rounds of this season’s competition will be played to a finish on the day, with extra-time and penalty shootouts if required.”

Replays in the the fifth round of the competition and onwards have not been played for a number of years now.

The move is one that has been welcomed by top clubs, particularly those in the Premier League who are involved in European competition.

But it does mean lower league clubs potentially missing out on huge pay days from replays at big clubs if they earn a draw at home.

The decision to scrap replays has been described as "exceptional" and they are due to return to the third and fourth round of next year's competition as things stand.

Replays used to be held for all rounds up to the final but were scrapped for the semi-finals in 1999/2000, before quarter-final replays were axed in 2016/17 and fifth round replays went in 2018 because of fixture congestion.
