Why are Tesco prices higher if you don't have a Clubcard?

Have you ever wondered why Tesco Clubcard members get the best deal whilst non-members have to pay a higher price?

Well the supermarket chain has explained the reason behind the difference in item prices with and without the blue card.

For example, in recent weeks, the retailer reduced 1L bottles of Baileys to £9.50 from £20 for Clubcard customers - making them cheaper than those bought in other supermarkets such as ASDA, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.

It is said that around 80% of transactions at large Tesco stores in the UK now use a Clubcard - meaning non-Clubcard holders are a minority.

According to Manchester Evening News, a basket of branded products cost £42.40 without a Clubcard but was later slashed by almost a third after Clubcard discounts with the price lowered to £29.22 - meaning those with the blue card saved almost £14.

The same basket would cost £32.07 in ASDA, £35.30 in Sainsbury's or £34.58 in Morrisons.

Despite shopping in Tesco being one of the cheapest options, it was also paradoxically the most expensive - that is if you don't have a Clubcard.

Addressing the situation, MEN asked Tesco why Clubcard prices can be significantly lower for shoppers with a Clubcard.

In response, Tesco said: "We're delighted that this analysis has recognised that Tesco Clubcard customers get the best value of any major supermarket when they shop with us – and over 20 million of our customers who regularly use Clubcard for their shop agree.

"We make it easy for customers to make choices about the data they share, and you can have a Clubcard and benefit from Clubcard Prices while choosing not to receive targeted marketing. We only ever use data that customers have agreed to share with Tesco, which allows us to personalise our offers.

"So, for example, if you’re looking for a bottle of red wine for Christmas, and there’s a great offer on the wine you usually buy, it’s helpful for us to let you know."
