Why are protesters blocking a route to Manchester Airport on the M56 this morning?

A protester has been detained by police as demonstrators block a motorway junction near Manchester Airport this morning.

Traffic has been brought to a standstill near the airport as campaigners block the carriageway near junction 6 of the M56.

The group of around ten, who say they are part of Insulate Britain, are sitting in the middle of the road close to traffic lights.

In scenes filmed by the M.E.N one protester appeared to be placed in handcuffs and was carried away by police officers at around 11.20am.

Video footage also shows a group of protesters standing in the middle of the road blocking vehicles which were trying to pass.

A small number of demonstrators have also attempted to glue themselves to the ground.

There are currently a number of police vehicles at the scene.

One demonstrator told the M.E.N that the action was aimed at making the UK government take notice of the climate crisis.

Paul Sheeky, who was glued to the road, said: “We’re here because the Government are failing to recognise the biggest threat to humanity that’s ever faced us.”

Calling Prime Minister Boris Johnson a ‘traitor’, Mr Sheeky said: “He’s endangering the lives of every single person in this country.”

The activist said Insulate Britain wants all social housing in the UK to be fully insulated by 2025.

“And we want all houses to have a full low carbon retrofit by 2030,” he said.

“This is recommended by the Government's own committee on climate change and it's one of the easiest and most cost effective ways of reducing emissions.

“But also it creates hundreds of thousands of jobs and brings people out of fuel poverty.”

Mr Sheeky apologised for the disruption but said: “We’re really sorry to have to do this but this is about years of government failure.

“The situation is really desperate when you look at the climate science.

“I don’t think we’re causing a huge amount of disruption from where we are and the police are causing more disruption from the way they have policed this.”

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham appeared to oppose the demonstration in a tweet this morning.

He wrote: "I can’t see how this type of protest does anything other than alienate people from the climate cause. Have been reassured @gmpolice are working to get things moving as soon as possible."

He later added: "We need to win much wider public support for climate action. This is doing the opposite."
