'He broke the mould' - Nottingham Forest fans reflect on Brian Clough's City Ground swansong

On this day in 1993, the great Brian Clough said an emotional goodbye to the City Ground as he oversaw his last home game as Nottingham Forest manager.

And a tear-jerking video from that day, which has been shared on social media, has pulled on the heartstrings of Reds supporters.

After 18 years in the Forest job, Clough called time on his managerial career in 1993. It marked the end of the most successful era in the club’s history.

In contrast to what had gone before, his reign ended with relegation, with his side losing 2-0 to Sheffield United in his final match on the banks of the Trent, before falling 2-1 at Ipswich Town on the last day of the season.

But in typical Clough style, he gave an honest post-match assessment of defeat to the Blades, before fighting back the tears.

“Happiness comes with insight. I’m a good socialist. I’m a good dad. I’m a good grandad. I’m happy,” he said.

Asked why his team had been unable to survive in the top-flight, he replied: “We’re not good enough.”

“Simple as that?”

“Simple as that.”

“And what about the manager,” came the response.

“Well, I think he must have contributed to it somewhere along the line. I don’t think he’s been good enough either,” said Clough.

Towards the end of the clip, Clough bids farewell to the BBC’s Barry Davies in a moment which won’t leave a dry eye in the house, before he eventually signs off with “no tears”.

Fans took to Twitter to comment on the video and remember the Reds legend.
