Why are Manchester United not playing this weekend?

It's FA Cup weekend as Manchester City face Brighton at Wembley on Saturday and Watford face Wolves at the same venue a day later.

As a result there are only six games in the Premier League being played and none of those include Manchester United.

This is potentially a good thing for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as it gives his squad the weekend to prepare for the massive Champions League quarter final against Barcelona next week.

The Reds were initially scheduled to play Wolves this weekend but as the Midlands team are in action at Wembley the fixture was brought forward to mid-week - United lost 2-1.

The gaffer knows his squad must be much better if they are to give the Catalan giants a good game, speaking at his press conference following the Premier League defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night, Ole was asked how his squad can improve before the anticipated European tie at Old Trafford.

“Oh, many, many things we have to improve, of course, because they are a top, top side,” Solskjaer told reporters. “But we’ll use one or two days now to analyse and recover. And we’ll prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge for the club and for the team.”

He added: “We will be ready for it. We have a lot of time to prepare. The fans [do] as well, because they don’t have a game at the weekend, so I know they will be pumped up to watch the game.”

Manchester United face Barcelona at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, kick-off is at 8pm.
