According to reports, Spice girls Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell won’t be attending their former bandmate Mel B’s wedding to hairdresser Rory McPhee this weekend.
The wedding is taking place at St Paul’s Cathedral in central London on Saturday. The majestic venue is not usually a wedding venue, but Mel B is able to wed there because she is an MBE, due to her charity work.
Co-stars Mel C and Emma Bunton are expected to be there.
This isn’t the first time that Beckham and Halliwell have missed one of Mel B’s celebrations. In May, they missed her 50th birthday party in Leeds.
This weekend will be Mel B’s third marrage. She divorced Hollywood movie producer Stephen Belafonte in March 2017, following allegations of abuse he has repeatedly denied.
Before this, she was married to Dutch backing dancer Jimmy Gulzar.
Why isn’t Victoria Beckham going to Mel B’s wedding?
According to The Mail, Posh Spice wanted to be at the wedding but has prior plans to be abroad. “She adores Mel, they get on really well despite their paths going in opposite directions,” a source reportedly said. “It's a real shame. There is no issue between them, they haven't fallen out. It's just one of those things.”
According to Hello, Beckham designed Mel B’s wedding dress and her mother’s dress for the occasion.
However, the Beckham and Mel B are said to have a fraught relationship in the past. According to The Mirror, they fell out on holiday in Hawaii in 1995. The paper reports that Mel B had a holiday romance with a man who allegedly defecated on a beach, to which Posh responded: “Doesn’t he know what a toilet is? It’s disgusting.”
In 2019, Beckham was reportedly opposed to a Spice Girls tour, which is said to have aggravated Mel B. A source is quoted in The Mirror saying: "The girls are furious with Victoria for initially agreeing to reunite, at one stage she even threatened to go legal if the girls cashed in on the brand minus her."
Mel B seemed to mock Beckham’s decision at Heidi Klum’s Halloween party in 2018, when she dressed up with a sign reading “I am NOT going on tour”.
It’s said that Beckham didn’t appreciate the joke. Reports claimed that she was frustrated that she’d been depicted as the “killjoy” of the group.
Why isn't Geri Halliwell going to Mel B’s wedding?
According to The Mail, Geri Halliwell and Mel B “have a tempestuous relationship and at times have struggled to be in the same room without there being animosity”.
Last year, Halliwell is said to have shut down discussions about a potential reunion tour due to her frustrations with Mel B.
A source told the Daily Mail that Halilwell had “lost patience” with Mel B’s “little digs and jibes”.
Tension between the pair is said to have developed in 2019, when Mel claimed that she’d slept with Geri when the band began.
Geri has denied this, and was reportedly upset that Mel made such a claim.
