Why Applebee’s offered Broncos QB Drew Lock a free meal

Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock will return to his homestate of Missouri this weekend to face the Chiefs, the team he grew up cheering for. Lock was a star basketball player and football player in high school in Lee’s Summit before going on to play QB for the University of Missouri in Columbia.

During his Wednesday media availability, Lock was asked if his fondest high school memories are from basketball or football. The QB gave a fun a little anecdote with his answer.

“Since I still play football, I’m going to have to go with the basketball memories,” Lock said. “You can’t get those back. You miss it a little bit. I love the game of basketball.

“We had an Applebee’s right across from our school — half-priced appetizers after 9 [p.m.] — by the time you’re done playing your game, you and a couple of buddies that stayed after to wait for you to come out of the locker room and you go over there, get a little kiwi lemonade and go to town.”

Applebee’s, a casual dining chain with 1,830 locations, probably loved that free advertising. The restaurant responded by offering Lock a free meal — “apps, entrees, you name it” — when he returns to Missouri this weekend.

There’s no word yet on if Lock plans to take up Applebee’s on their offer.
