The latest major crossover in gaming history just dropped, with "Apex Legends" and the "Cyberpunk" franchise recently collaborating to deliver the iconic characters and locations from the dystopian futuristic game to the free-to-play FPS.
Not only is this a massive crossover for gamers, but Electronic Arts developers have recently expressed that this is a significant achievement for them.
'Apex Legends' x 'Cyberpunk' Crossover Is a Bucket List for Devs
Developers at Respawn Entertainment sat down with Comic Book to discuss why the pairing felt like a natural fit and which crossovers they are still dreaming about.
Lead technical designer Jesse Medellin confirmed that "Cyberpunk 2077" has long been on the wishlist for many members of the development team.
"This is definitely one of the bucket list IPs for me and a lot of devs on the team," Medellin said. "They're huge fans of the Cyberpunk universe. It's been incredible to be able to work with CDPR and bring these elements into Apex."
Art director Alisa Rastorgueva, also known as "Overclocked," noted that the collaboration doubles down on theexisting theme of Season 29. World director Eduardo Agostini added that the E-District map already had a cyberpunk-like visual language in place, making "Night City" a natural extension of the environment rather than a visual clash.
The team's guiding principle throughout was that the collab characters should feel embedded in "Apex Legends" rather than simply wearing costumes from another universe.
Dream Crossover For EA's Online FPS Title
When asked about future crossovers they would personally want to pursue, the developers were candid. Agostini said he would love to see a "Masters of the Universe" collaboration, noting that it is something he has been pitching internally for years.
Rastorgueva hinted that more crossovers are already in the pipeline, saying the team always has several spokes in the fire at any given time.
Medellin reflected on how the "Cyberpunk 2077" crossover shaped his perspective on future collaborations.
The variety in how different playtesters gravitated toward each new mechanic turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the entire development process. Some players never strayed from the Sandevistan dash while others committed fully to the Blackwall Breach ability.
What to Expect From 'Cyberpunk' Crossover
The event introduces two new Cyberware mods for the Wildcard mode, including:
- Sandevistan - allows players to chain quick dashes in any direction that also recharge shields, useful for closing gaps or escaping danger.
- Blackwall Breach - lets players phase into the net to reposition, then release a disruptive EMP that cracks enemy shields and marks their location.
Both mods come with a shared risk system as the more a player uses their cyberware, the higher their Cyberware Capacity climbs. Push it too far, and the character enters Cyberpsychosis, turning into a fast-moving melee beast that loses access to weapons, abilities, shields, and grenades.
Players can manage this by finding Immunoblocker Syringes scattered across the map or Immunoblocker Caches that reset the meter entirely.
The E-District map has also been visually transformed for the event, adding towering neon skyboxes, holographic koi drifting through the sky, and glitched signage throughout. Eight Legend skins are available for Axle, Sparrow, Lifeline, Crypto, Rampart, Loba, Ash, and Gibraltar, alongside eight weapon skins and a Mythic Skippy Alternator that players can upgrade with Exotic Shards.
Two limited-edition Nessie plushies inspired by Lucy and Rebecca will also be available for pre-order through Youtooz from July 15 through August 18.
