Why Andre Onana has been removed from Cameroon’s World Cup squad amid Serbia clash

Andre Onana has been removed from Cameroon's World Cup squad after a shouting match with manager Rigobert Song.

The Inter Milan goalkeeper played in The Indomitable Lions' World Cup defeat to Switzerland last week and was in contention to start for their vital clash today against Serbia. However, Abha shot-stopper Devis Epassy was named in the starting XI for the first time since October 2021.

Onana's dismissal is believed to have come after he was involved in a shouting match with Song over his style of play and the team's tactics. The dismissal will be a blow to the African nation's ambitions of progressing through the World Cup group stage for the first time since 1990.

According to Helena Condis Edo, the 26-year-old believes his relationship with the team is 'irreversible' despite legendary striker Samuel Eto'o undergoing mediate peace talks between the two parties.

Spanish outlet Marca have also suggested that coach Song raged at Onana during a training session for taking too many risks playing with his feet, which Onana refused to budge on.

The game against Serbia itself provided a frenzy period of play in the first half that saw Strahinja Palovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic score in added time to lead 2-1.
