Why Anderlecht sporting director regrets signing former Man City star Samir Nasri

Anderlecht sporting director Michael Verschueren has admitted that he regrets signing former Man City playmaker Samir Nasri because of injury problems.

City legend Vincent Kompany left the Blues last summer to take charge of his boyhood club and quickly used his contacts and profile to bring in some new faces.

Along with the likes of former Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli and highly-rated Leeds United striker Kemar Roofe, Anderlecht recruited Nasri on a free following his release from West Ham United at the end of the 2018/19 season.

However, things haven't gone to plan so far with a series of defeats and a lack of coaching badges seeing Kompany taking a background role, while the big signings have struggled for fitness.

Nasri has managed just eight appearances for the club, scoring twice, and has been out of action since October with a hamstring injury and a tear in his abductor muscle.

Verschueren has now conceded that signing the 32-year-old was a mistake.

"If I had to do it again, would we have signed Samir Nasri? With what we know now, no," he told  Proximus.

"We're very worried about Nacer Chadli's calf injury. If we had known about it, we might have acted differently. We've been unlucky. We wanted him to play more. You can get injured once, but for a second time, it's not positive."

Despite an optimistic start to the season Anderlecht currently sit down in ninth place in the Jupiler Po League.
