Why Ander Herrera is set to leave Manchester United for Paris Saint-Germain

Ander Herrera agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain amid a lack of communication from Manchester United over his future.

Herrera, who is approaching the last two months of his United deal, is believed to have sealed a pre-contract agreement with PSG following a lack of clarity from United during protracted contract negotiations. The MEN understands United eventually offered Herrera improved terms but he had already come to an arrangement with PSG.

The 29-year-old midfielder's original intention was to stay at United and Herrera's camp initially downplayed PSG's interest, since they expected him to commit at Old Trafford. However, PSG intensified their efforts to recruit Herrera during the international break at a time where United were busier finalising a permanent contract for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Earlier this week, Herrera told Spanish outlet ABC: "I want to beat Barcelona and think about football. It is true that I have only two months of contract and today Manchester United and I are not thinking the same and there is no renewal agreement, but my duty is to continue listening to United.

"I will listen to United, of course, but also to other clubs. I do not close doors."

United triggered the one-year extension in Herrera's contract last season but the Basque was only informed via post. United claimed they began negotiations over an improved contract early last season.

Herrera did not appear in the Champions League quarter-final defeat to Barcelona due to injury and has not figured since he was substituted in the 2-1 win over Watford nearly two weeks ago. Solskjaer wanted to keep Herrera but is set to see a second midfielder leave on his watch, having sanctioned Marouane Fellaini's January departure for Shandong Luneng.

United signed Herrera for £29million from Athletic Bilbao in 2014 and the Spain international won the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League. Herrera is the only outfield recipient of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

PSG were keen to sign an established midfielder to offset the imminent departure of Adrien Rabiot, who is running his contract down.
