Why a low-flying plane will be soaring over eight Irish counties in the coming days

Skygazers will likely notice a low-flying plane soaring over them in the coming days, especially if they're living in the midlands and the south.

Earlier this year, a surveillance aircraft undertook a project to map parts of counties until the end of the year. That project is set to resume this week.

In doing so, it's set to fly over Laois, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Waterford, and neighbouring parts of Kildare, Carlow, Offaly and Cork.

The operation forms part of the next phase of the Tellus Survey, a nationwide programme organised by Geological Survey Ireland.

The project started in September and weather permitting, the flight plan for this week - December 7 until December 12 - is displayed in the flight lines viewer below.

At present, the survey is 44% complete and this week is set to be the last one of production flying for 2020, with flights resuming in late February 2021.

The recognisable twin-propeller plane can be identified by its red tail and black stripe, as well as the word 'SURVEY' written across both sides.

Speaking previously with the Irish Mirror, Dr James Hodgson, Senior Geologist and Project Manager for Tellus, said: “The Tellus Survey is an important national project, providing valuable insights into the geological makeup of Ireland.

"The data collected from the Tellus Survey helps us to sustainably manage our environment and natural resources as well as protecting public health. I am delighted that the south central phase has commenced and we thank the communities of Laois, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Waterford Offaly, Cork, Carlow and Kildare for their support during this flying season.”

Anyone with concerns about the impact of the low-altitude plane on sensitive livestock is advised to contact the Tellus Freephone Information Line on 1800 45 55 65.
