Why a giant polar bear was spotted in Leeds city centre today

A huge polar bear has been on the loose in Leeds city centre today.

The giant animatronic beast was spotted by people out on their lunch break and those doing a bit of last-minute Christmas shopping in Trinity Leeds.

Polly the polar bear hasn't got lost on her way from the Arctic though - despite the presence of an igloo in the shopping centre too.

Instead, it was all part of a campaign from Yorkshire Water to encourage people to keep their homes winter ready over Christmas.

With many people heading off to visit family over the festive period, Yorkshire Water have urged people to take steps to ensure pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks, and water meters do not freeze and subsequently burst in cold temperatures.

Experts told shoppers to follow a few simple steps to avoid a disaster, such as protecting exposed pipe work with waterproof foam lagging or insulation and keeping homes warm, even when you're away.
