Why a former Newcastle United transfer target has been banned from football for six months

Former Newcastle United transfer target Gelson Martins has been banned from football for six months.

The Portugal international winger almost joined the Magpies on a loan deal from Atletico Madrid in January of last year while Rafa Benitez was in charge of the club.

A move never transpired, though, and he opted to join Ligue 1 giants Monaco instead.

After a successful half-season loan spell, the 24-year-old made his move to the French principality permanent.

However, his second season in Monte Carlo has not gone as swimmingly and he has now made headlines for all the wrong reasons at the Stade Louis II.

Martins has been banned for six months for twice pushing the referee in his side's Ligue 1 defeat at Nimes last month.

The former Sporting Lisbon star had originally been banned indefinitely after the incident on February 1.

Martins shoved referee Mickael Lesage after team-mate Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off and pushed the official a second time after receiving a red card himself.

Monaco ended up losing the game 3-1.
