Why a flash mob appeared in Newcastle as dancers and singers stop crowds at the Monument

A flash mob surprised Christmas shoppers in the busy centre of Newcastle on Saturday as a mass dance broke out at the Monument.

After a singer started singing I Dreamed a Dream, passers-by stopped in their tracks as a crowd suddenly swarmed in and started dancing to a blast of music.

While it took a while for many people to find out what was going on, it gradually became clear that their seemingly fun get-together actually had a serious intention - to spread a message about leaving the EU.

The young dancers whipped off their jackets to reveal blue T-shirts reading Brexit Party.

While for many Brexit might not seem an obvious reason to break out in spontaneous dance, the display won some applause from spectators for the dancers who, once finished, disappeared through the crowd as quickly as they came.

As they left, members of the group confirmed they were Brexit supporters who had come up to Newcastle from Yorkshire as part of a flash mob tour of the country.

When asked what they were hoping to achieve, one of the group confirmed the intention was to "change politics and lighten the mood a little bit".

They certainly picked a busy day - and packed location - for their visit, having to vie for attention with a street band and attractions of the Christmas market which currently surround the Monument.
