Why a fifth of UK voters won’t be able to cast a ballot in a snap election

According to the Electoral Commission, up to 9.4 million of eligible voters are not listed on the electoral register.

Ans up to another 5.6 million registrations in local councils are reported to be inaccurate in December 2018.

That means that almost 20% of the UK voting population would not be able to vote in the case of a snap election.

According to the Electoral Reform Society, younger people and renters are missing from the register in greater proportions than older voters and owner-households.

Private renters are least likely to have accurate and up-to-date entries on the register – with just 58 per cent being correctly registered, compared with 91 per cent of homeowners.

Registration levels are also low amongst young people aged 18-34, with only 71 percent correctly registered, compared to 94 percent of people aged 65 and over.

How to check you’re registered

If you are not sure you are listed at your local council, you can check on a dedicated page of the government's website.

You can also register on the same page.
