Why a fake bird of prey is flying over the Sage Gateshead on the Quayside

A new addition has been added to the world famous skyline of the Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside in a bid to stop fowl behaviour.

A giant bird of prey appears to have taken residence at the Sage Gateshead close to the Millennium Bridge and has been seen hovering over the well known music venue.

The bird is actually a fake, suspended on a wire at the very top of the building and 'flies' around due to gusts of wind.

The installation was put up in the last month and is intended to scare away birds who could 'muck up' the glass building.

A spokesperson at Sage Gateshead said: "The temporary bird deterrent we have on the roof of Sage Gateshead is to try and help protect the building from the damage that is being caused by the bird excreta on the roof panels and to the rope access equipment used to be able to clean them.

"The bird is being used as a deterrent and one which has the least impact to local wildlife."

The scarer is intended to stop all kinds of birds from landing on the roof, including the kittiwake colony that nests on the Quayside each year.
