Why a Bristol shopping centre was evacuated this morning

Customers were forced to leave shops in Clifton following the evacuation of a Bristol shopping centre.

Crowds of shoppers were spotted standing outside the entrance to Clifton Down Shopping Centre on Tuesday morning (August 6).

Pictures show both customers and members of staff standing next to the Sainsbury's store following the evacuation.

A spokesman for the shopping centre confirmed to Bristol Live  that a "planned fire drill" was the reason behind the evacuation.

He added customers had been let back into the shopping centre and everything had returned to normal.

In other Bristol news, a police car overturned in a crash on the M5 which also saw one driver arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A Yate man has also been found guilty of groping a woman and a teenage girl following a trial at Bristol Crown Court.
