After trading up to the No. 3 overall pick, the San Francisco 49ers selected North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL draft.
Lance’s ceiling is seen by many as one of the highest in this year’s class. He possesses a strong arm that allows him to stretch the field vertically with tremendous velocity and distance. His flashes of deep-ball accuracy project well at the next level.
He is also a true dual-threat talent with elite athletic ability for the quarterback position. Though only a one-year starter at the FCS level, he played a massive role in the Bison winning the national championship in 2019 and dominated the competition.
The 49ers had widely been expected to target a quarterback in this year’s draft for months, and when they traded with the Dolphins to acquire the third overall pick, it was apparent they would take a player at the position. Lance is their choice to be their franchise quarterback as they pursue a continuation of the juggernaut that appeared likely after their Super Bowl appearance in 2019.
