Actress Whoopi Goldberg is writing her very own superhero movie.
The 65-year-old comedy actress told Variety that she’s a bit of a superhero fan herself, and that she’s currently writing a script for her own super-powered adventure.
“Since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with superheroes,” she revealed. “They’re all saving the earth all the time. But do you know who’s really going to save the earth? Old Black women.”
The script, which Goldberg is currently in the process of writing, follows an older black woman who acquires new powers – and is forced to learn how to use them.
If that sounds familiar – it should.
Netflix’s Thunder Force, written by Ben Falcone and starring his wife Melissa McCarthy, was released just weeks ago. It has a similar premise, too – with Octavia Spencer suiting up as part of the titular Thunder Force after gaining superpowers.
However, the film was a huge flop, currently standing at an embarrassing 23% fresh over at Rotten Tomatoes.
Although Whoopi Goldberg is known for her quick wit and comedy timing, it’s unclear whether her superhero script will also be a comedy film.
Either way, it seems like a great time for Whoopi Goldberg to make moves into the superhero genre. It’s traditionally been a white-dominated medium, but with calls for diversity across film and television, an older black superhero could be exactly what we need.
Whoopi Goldberg will also reprise her role as a lounge singer turned nun in Sister Act 3 – a comedy original currently in production for Disney+.
And it sounds as though her old pals will be getting back into their old habits.
“Marc Shaiman [the franchise’s composer] is just waiting,” she teased. “The nuns are all waiting. Maybe there’s gonna be some of the kids [from Sister Act 2]. Who can say?”
