Could Whoopi Goldberg be the Fourteenth Doctor?
The Sister Act star wants to succeed Jodie Whittaker and become the first American to take on the iconic leading role in Doctor Who.
The 65-year-old is so serious about starring in the hit BBC sci-fi show that she's even spoken to Fourth Doctor Tom Baker about it and once offered her services to the broadcaster.
After reports that Thirteenth Doctor Jodie is stepping down after the upcoming series, Whoopi is throwing her hat in the ring to be the next star to take over the TARDIS.
Speaking in the January edition of SFX magazine, she said: "I was lucky enough to speak to Tom Baker about it – he’s the Doctor I know best.
"For me, Tom Baker was the best Doctor. Of course, the younger Doctors are good, but when it comes to the older Doctors, it was always Tom Baker for me."
She added: "I wanted to be the first female Doctor, but they have one. I said to him, 'I love the idea of an American Doctor Who'… I’m still trying to do it."
Ghost star Whoopi said in 2019 that she asked BBC bosses to let her be the first female Doctor, but had been turned down.
She told Tenth Doctor David Tennant on his podcast: "I wanted to be the first female Doctor".
She added: "We don't have a Doctor Who. We don't have that character who is travelling through dimension and time, and being an observer – sometimes a hindrance, sometimes a help. The idea of that just so made me happy."
Whoopi went on to say she offered herself up for the role, but that she was turned down.
She said: "But they were like, ''Um, no.'' So I was like, 'OK, I'm cool. I understand'."
Whoopi, who played Guinan in Star Trek: The Next Generation, is a huge science fiction fan.
She explained to David: "I always felt like science fiction movies predicted the future.
"They told you what was coming, and how to prepare for it. Whether it was climate change, hand computers or being able to move around in different dimensions."
