Whoopi Goldberg's prayers have been answered – here's how to run Diablo 4 on Mac

Sister Act and Star Trek star Whoopi Goldberg has lambasted Activison Blizzard for not officially releasing Diablo 4 on Mac, but avid users have found a workaround.

Right up on the top of my list of things I never expected to see today, close to Metal Gear Solid 6 being announced, is Whoopi Goldberg taking issue with Activision’s decision to not release Diablo 4 on Mac. The hellish hack-and-slasher released this past Tuesday on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S to critical acclaim. But unfortunately this isn’t good enough for the Hollywood actress and Sister Act star.

“I already bought Diablo 4,” Goldberg said in a video posted to her Instagram yesterday. She then took it upon herself to rake Activision Blizzard over the coals (in jest, of course) in the attempt to get its new Diablo game released natively on Mac. “Blizzard Entertainment, this is Whoopi, you know much I love Diablo,” she continued. “I would like y'all to let those of us who use our Apples to play, allow us to play on the Apple. Take Diablo 4 and let us do it and have a great time.”

Rod Fergusson, general Manager for the Diablo franchise, then promptly responded in a Twitter post – and he was just as surprised as the rest of us. “I did not have ‘Whoopi Goldberg yelling at me on Instagram’ on my #DiabloIV launch bingo card,” he expressed. Notably Fergusson failed to mention whether Goldberg’s comments would be enough to make Activision Blizzard port the game to Mac.

How to run Diablo 4 on Mac

Of course, rarely is something impossible in the gaming world, and such is the case with getting Diablo 4 to run on a Mac. Whoopie Goldberg will be ecstatic to discover that a method to run any Windows game on Mac does in fact exist, using Apple's new Game Porting Toolkit, which is currently in beta. The new tool instantly translates Windows games to run on macOS, allowing developers and confident Mac users to run unmodified versions of Windows games on Mac.

The process has been laid out by a user called LayerKey in an extensive Reddit post. The embedded video looks a little choppy when played, but Layerkey promises that “in reality the game is really smooth, no lag/delay or any other problems”. Getting Diablo 4 to run on a Mac looks very involved for players not used to indulging in third-party workarounds, we’ll admit, but the fact is, you can do it.

Is Whoopi Goldberg willing to put the time to get Diablo 4 running on her Mac? It’s doubtful, but until Activision Blizzard take the time to port a native version, it’s at least heartening to see players come up with a viable solution that mere days after the game’s official launch this week. In the meantime, if you aren’t a Mac user, Diablo 4 is obviously available to play on PC via the Battle.net client.
