Whoopi Goldberg is 'Hollywood royalty' on cover of VARIETY's pre-Oscars issue

Whoopi Goldberg has appeared on the front cover of VARIETY's pre-Oscars issue.

The Color Purple star, 65, became the first Black woman in over 50 years to win an Academy Award in 1991 for her turn as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost.

Now Whoopi has donned the cover VARIETY as the publication readies for Sunday's Oscars ceremony.

For the Hollywood Royalty issue of the magazine, Whoopi poses in a black ruffled dress from designer Christian Siriano on the front cover and in the photoshoot inside.

In the accompanying article, Whoopi reflected on her big win back in 1991 and how she styled herself for the ceremony.

Whoopi recalled: "I couldn't look glamorous like other people look glamorous.

"I wasn't thin and I wasn't a white lady, so I had to find my own style."

The View panelist later went with a black sequined gown with a column style, designed by Nolan Miller.

The designer had previously worked on gowns for Whoopi's iconic mentor Elizabeth Taylor.

Judging her outfit today, Whoopi concluded that the "dress was cute".

The actress also revealed what it was like to compete with her fellow nominees that year: Annette Bening, Lorraine Bracco, Diane Ladd, and Mary McDonnell.

There was no difficulties between the actresses, with Whoopi even taking them out for dinner when she won.

"Any one of us could've taken it, and I don't think anybody would've been mad at anybody else," Whoopi revealed.

"Sometimes you look at actors and you know, 'Oh, he's mad,' but with us, it was just 'Whoever wins is paying, that's all I know. Free food.'"

In another look for the magazine, Whoopi donned a Christian Siriano blue coat with a pink headscarf from Gucci and a white bowler hat from Nina Ricci.

Whoopi also revealed a piece of advice that the legendary late Elizabeth Taylor once gave her.

Elizabeth once said: "You and I know you can do anything, but you are Black, so it’s going to be harder for folks to believe."

She added: "It's going to be up and down. If you have a way to see where you were, it will allow you to not give up in tough times."

Whoopi is now one of only 16 entertainers to achieve the much-desired EGOT, winning an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.
